Experience a New Concept in Care

The St. Francis Imaging Center is the first in Indiana to offer cutting-edge ambient technology in our CT scan suite. The ambient technology creates a more relaxed atmosphere for patients.

Common questions about ambient technology:

What is ambient technology and why is it important?

Ambient technology uses projected images, environmental lighting and natural sound effects to create a soothing environment for patients undergoing a CT scan. Designed by Philips Medical Systems, the patented technology is designed to relax patients–especially children–undergoing a CT scan.

CT scans can be stressful for patients because of the size of the equipment, the loud noise the equipment makes during the test, and the requirement of patients to hold absolutely still–and frequently hold their breath–in order to obtain accurate images. The ambient images and sounds allow patients something soothing and relaxing to focus their attention on during the CT scan, thus eliminating some of the stress.

How does ambient technology work?

Patients use swipe cards to create a customized experience during their CT scan. During the test, the patient is immersed in soothing images–such as an underwater seascape or a mountain vista–projected onto the room's ceiling and walls. The projected images are accompanied by coordinated soft, colored lighting and sounds that complement the visual images.

What are the benefits of ambient technology?

The ambient experience has been shown to have soothing effects on the patient during the CT scan test, creating less stress and anxiety. In fact, studies have revealed that the relaxing effects of ambient technology reduce the need to sedate children undergoing a CT scan and also decrease the need for repeat testing.
